Zola tipped for magpies too

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has now been linked to both vacant coaching posts in his old Premier League stamping ground.

The Italy under-21 assistant coach, who has already had two meetings with West Ham director Mike Lee about replacing Alan Curbishley, was on Monday reported to be high on Newcastle United's wish list to replace Kevin Keegan.

The Guardian newspaper said Zola, who received an honorary OBE for his services to British sport after a dazzling seven-year stint for the Blues, has been contacted by ex-clubmate Denis Wise, director of sport for the Magpies.

Keegan quit Newcastle last week, unhappy with Wise's role.

Back in London, Hammers director Lee said Zola had ''really shone'' during his second chat.

Former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni had also made a strong impression, Lee said.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic and ex-Juventus Denmark Michael Laudrup, former coach of Spain's Getafe, are also in with a strong chance, West Ham have said.

Zola, who scored 89 goals in 249 games for Chelsea between 1996 and 2003 and was voted the Blues' best player ever, has said he is happy as No.2 in the Italy under-21 set-up under former Chelsea clubmate Pierluigi Casiraghi.

But he has made no secret of the fact that he would jump at the chance to coach a top club.
