3174 Watery visits in Umbria
Getting away from towns and cities, Umbria has some wonderful water features.
Not too far from Terni, you find Le Cascate delle Marmore. This is a very spectacular waterfall. Not just any old waterfall, this one is a working waterfall, and only puts on a display for visitors when ENEL isn’t harnessing it for making electricity. Thus, if you pick your time carefully, you can admire the rather lovely pool beneath it, wait for the siren and head for higher ground pretty quickly – and hey presto – instant waterfall!. Youngsters tend to be particularly awestruck. More details and timetable of performances on

(You will notice the white water boating pics on this page, too!)
For the more poetic, the Fonte dei Clitunno, just north of Spoleto is quite magical. Deep lakes from which springs bubble up, swans and peacefulness.
There are also the lakes of Trasimeno - big, clean, plenty of facilities, camping, ferries to islands, birdwatching reserves, site of Hannibal's battle against the Romans; Lago di Chiusi - very quiet and peaceful, lots of wildlife and walking; Lake Corbara between Todi and Orvieto, this one is artificial, good fishing, and the road alongside the lake is great to drive. There is also Lake Piediluco, another reservoir, with much rowing.
The Tiber makes a good showing all through Umbria on its way to Rome.
So, for a region without any coastline, there is no need not to get wet!!
