7416 Castles of northeast Basilicata

If you enjoy castles from medieval times a trip to the northeastern portion of Basilicata between the A16 and A3 would be worth your time. This area was a favorite hunting area for Frederick II who ruled in the early part of the thirteenth century. The town of Melfi is overshadowed by a large castle you can explore which includes a museum with artifacts from Greek-influenced local history. This city has a definite medieval stamp on it despite having been severely damaged several times by earthquakes.

South of Melfi the castle of Lagopesole is an imposing fortress that is visible for many miles and overlooks the surrounding countryside. Nearby is also the city of Venosa with its own castle and the imposing walls of an incomplete cathedral. Each castle has a museum which covers different periods of Basilicata history.

To drive the rolling hills amongst the vineyards and wheat fields is a relaxing experience and be sure to enjoy the local Aglianico del Vulture wine. The Lucani people, the historical name for Basilicata, are always friendly and welcoming.
