6080 Venafro
Just to start a thread about Molise. Venafro is a very old town. I have always thought of it as the last out post of the holy Roman empire. Its a small town with a castle that looks over the plain of Venafro. The Vulturno flows through it. I have stayed on holiday about 20 kilometers from there. Its the main town with the hospital for all around. Its a great place to retire and has very little "delinquency". There are not many tourists as its very much out-of-the-way.
Its famous for its olive oil and has been quoted as such by Romans two thousand years ago, and in the last war was a defensive position for the Germans fighting off the allied forces. It was part the Gothic line. I have heard many a story about the soldiers from the old inhabitants. How they had seen Polish, Indian, English, French, American and Moroccan (fighting with the free french). I have even heard of a Japanese battalion fighting in the American forces near by venafro . So in the second world war this sleepy part of Italy came alive with people from All over the world. It has a war grave site that is French/Marocan
Hannibal passed by here too with his army.
They are great cheese makers too with a few specialty cheeses. But the best thing about it, is the countryside near by. Peace and quite is what's around the corner here, and simplicity.
