6200 Alghero
Having travelled to other Italian more touristy cities we found the food and drink to be very localised in Alghero, as in we could only get the local stuff, maybe that was because this was out of tourist time but it was by no means a bad thing- it meant we got to try the local way of Italian food without umming and ahing in the amount we normally do. The local cheese has a Parmesan texture and similarity, but is a lot stronger and therefore less is required on your plate..! As for wine, we normally look for Pinot Grigio’s, Frascati’s or Souaves etc, mostly because they’re our favourites, but there are none to be found. I don’t think we recognised any types- we still have some wine tasting events to go to- but again, this was not a bad thing. So much so that we made the effort to buy local wines we liked from the local shops to bring back to England to enjoy on a cold winters Sunday. We would recommend Vermintino di Sardinia.
As Alghero is a port-town, there are many restaurants specialising in fish and seafood and whilst these looked appetising, Leon being vegetarian and Jane not a seafood eater, we made use of the pizza and pasta options of the menus. During your visit, you must call in to Aragon Pizzeria next to the cinema and Spaghetteria within the historical city walls. Another place was suggested to us on at least two occasions but we never managed to get there, although it’s next door to Spaghetteria- another Pizzeria called Casa Blanca. You can get a good pizza at Bella Napoli, as well as the best gelati in Alghero and any local wines and breads on Piazza Civica Di Alghero. All the restaurants are reasonably priced with Pizza’s starting at 4 euros and litres of wine from 8 euros.
For the bread fans out there, the traditional dry, crispy very flat and very thin bread is an excellent accompaniment to your antipasti!
There are lots of bars and restaurants in Aghero, and a good amount of snack bars and café’s throughout the day. We found ourselves a nice little bar on Via Roma that became a regular calling place, after the geletaria that is- though what it was called, we can’t remember! Failing that, McDonalds and supermarkets are in easy walking distance from the port.
