Now that we're officially residents, we have been looking into joining the Italian health system. We are retired US gov't. employees with Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance that covers us in Italy (reimbursement basis).
Our concern about the Italian health system is the cost. I have read that it will cost us 7.5% of our total income. I have also read that retirement income is excluded in the calculation and once read that investment income is also excluded. Does anyone have any definitive information on what income is the base to which the 7.5% is applied?
I know all of the benefits of the system and it's very tempting. However, if it costs 7.5% of our total income, plus the amount we are paying for BC/BS--something we can't give up, it may not be worth it.
Any suggestions, advice, counsel would be greatly appreciated.
