I have relatives here in Italy. They all say that other members of the family are responsible for a persons debts. So for example when my Italian wifes parents, either or both, die owing say 30,000 euro, it is supposedly my wife and I who pick up the tab. Surely not, otherwise any parent could go on a million euro spending spree leaving the son/daughter to pay.
In UK, any debts have to be paid off from the dead person's estate. Nobody else is required to step in.
Can anyone confirm the Italian situation? It seems ridiculous to me that I be forced to sell off my house just cos father-in-law got into financial difficulty
