I always find in Umbria that people are ready to chat and help you with your Italian. I had some of the best conversations with people and came away with words and phrases I hadn't previously known. I talked to people about everything from the weather to art to politics to cooking. And they appreciate the effort you put in to it too. My other half is always baffled when I start chatting cos he doesn't know any Italian save the basic greetings and gbeing polite! I spoke to a garage mechanic about my flat tyre on the car, I got my bike tyre pumped up by a man in his driveway cutting his nephews hair and learnt all about his family, I discussed cooking with the bar owner in panicale and discussed the passing of the Pope with the owner of the supermarket. Just like being at home! Everyone is happy to chat. That's what I love most about Umbria.
