In 1999, The Touring Club Italiano set up a new product to help improve and promote smaller and less well known areas by developing the local tourism there.
The project was called Bandiere Arancione (Orange Flags). Similar to the Blue Flags which are awarded for quality of beaches.
The aims were to protect, develop and market areas who were keen on maintaining local identities, culture, traditions etc.
It was the only Italian project featured in the World Tourism Organization of 50 worldwide projects to aid and develop tourism.
So far 100 Orange Flags have been awarded in Italy.
Tuscany heads the list with 29. Emilia Romagna with 18 and Le Marche takes 3rd place with 14 flags which are to be found in :
