The tenth president of the Italian Republic on May 13, 1999, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, was born in Livorno on December 9, 1920. Ciampi received a degree in Literature in 1941 from the Scuola Normale of Pisa, one of Italy's most prominent universities, and a Law degree from the University of Pisa in 1946.
After receiving his law degree, Ciampi began working at the Banca d'Italia. He worked in the central administration and then became the Secretary General in 1973, the Vice Director General in 1976, Director General in 1978 and eventually made his way to Governor of the Banca d'Italia and President of the Ufficio Italiano Cambi.
Ciampi was the Italian Prime Minister from April 1993 to May 1994 and later the Treasury Minister from 1996 to 1999 in the governments of Romano Prodi and Massimo D'Alema. He was credited with adopting the euro currency and chose the Italian design for the 1-euro coin.
