Two-times world champion Fernando Alonso was interviewed by a public prosecutor in the northern city of Modena on Tuesday in connection with a probe into Formula 1's spying scandal.
The Spanish driver is not a suspect in the investigation and he was called to Modena only as a person able to provide information on the passage of Ferrari information to Alonso's McLaren team, prosecutor Giuseppe Tibis said.
The Modena prosecutors' office is looking into the spying controversy because it is the nearest one to the headquarters of Ferrari, which launched legal action earlier this year.
Six members of the McLaren team, including boss Ron Dennis, are under investigation in the Modena probe which looking into the accusations sports fraud, stealing industrial secrets and breach of copyright.
Asked whether there were any new developments in the investigation, Tibis was non-committal. "They are always possible," he said.
Alonso made no statement to the press either when he arrived at the prosecutors's office or when he left two and a half hours later.
It was presumed that he was asked to give details of certain e-mails between him and McLaren test driver Pedro De La Rosa which demonstrated that the British team knew one of its staff had Ferrari information.
These e-mails were the crucial evidence in the decision by Formula 1 authorities to punish McLaren for cheating by scratching all its points in the constructors' championship.
McLaren, which was accused of using leaked Ferrari information to enhance its racing cars, was also fined 100,000 dollars by the governing FIA's World Council.
