An Italian woman who has been in menopause for a year gave birth to twins on Wednesday. Adele Dramis, a 53-year-old neurophysiologist from Naples, had been trying for kids since she got married when she was 45.
She has had assisted-fertility treatment in Italian and foreign clinics.
After a string of miscarriages, she finally conceived last July, about a year after entering menopause.
Doctors said it was ''a triumph'' for a menopausal woman to give birth, even with implanted embryos.
''We are at the limits of natural possibilities,'' said Fabio Sirimarco, the chief gynecologist who has been treating Dramis at Naples' Cardarelli Hospital. The new mother said it was ''a unique joy'' to finally have children.
''I fought for nine years. I'd go through everything I have done again in order to have children''.
Doctors said the newborns, a boy and a girl delivered by Caesarian section, were ''doing very well''.
