Portofino holds Ancient Greek craft

The waters of Portofino conceal the wrecks of "at least one" Ancient Greek ship, heritage conservation officials said Tuesday.

The find brings to seven the number of amphorae found at Portofino in recent years, Liguria Heritage chief Giampiero Martino told reporters.

An unmanned exploration capsule spotted the latest wine container in the port itself.

Boats may be banned from tying up at the chic resort while divers look for the ancient craft, Martino said.

Greek and Roman ships have turned up all around the Italian coast, whose waters are still teeming with ancient treasure.

Historians say there was a flourishing wine trade between the original Greek settlement at Portofino and the major Greek city in the northern Mediterranean, Marseilles.

Five of the amphorae have turned up off the headland that juts out from Portofino, one a few hundred metres up the shore and the latest one just inside the harbour area.

The final one was found and filmed by a remote-controlled undersea exploration vessel called Pluto.

"Our immediate concern is to get the amphorae up in the best possible condition", Martino said.

"Then we'll launch the hunt for the ships".

"They simply must be down there, somewhere".
