Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will appear in the American TV series ‘Great Performances’ in March.
PBS will air ‘Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino’ as part of its ‘Great Performances’ long-running series dedicated to the performing arts. The show features a concert special in which Bocelli sets aside classical music aside for an evening of international favourites inspired by Portofino in Genoa on the Italian Riviera.
Bocelli performs some of the world’s most popular love songs in the concert including ‘Senza Fine’ (Without End), ‘Quizás, Quizás, Quizás’ (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps), ‘Bésame Mucho’ (Kiss Me A Lot), ‘Champagne’, ‘Love Me Tender’, ‘When I Fall in Love’ and – in a simulated duet with the late French singer Edith Piaf – ‘La Vie en Rose’ (Life Through Rose-Coloured Glasses). Bocelli sings in five languages – Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese – as well as Neapolitan dialect.
The tenor is accompanied by the Ensemble Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giacomo Loprieno. Grammy-winner David Foster acts as music director and keyboard accompanist. Bocelli is also joined by trumpeter Chris Botti. Among the audience watching Bocelli’s concert under the stars were Canadian-American singer Paul Anka, British actor Sir Michael Caine and Italian actress Ornella Muti.
Portofino is an upmarket resort noted for its picturesque harbour. It has been a haunt of many famous visitors as demonstrated by a kaleidoscopic photomontage in the TV show featuring cinematic legends Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor, and contemporary celebrities such as Denzel Washington and Ellen DeGeneres.
