Arsonists(ANSA) - Arsonists continue to strike in the Italian capital and last night set fire to five automobiles and three mopeds.

Police have set up special units to try and nab the arsonists who have been active since the end of June, when they burned 25 cars and motorbikes in the capital's Tiburtino district.

The arsonists were out in full force during the night between July 1 and 2 when they set fire to 31 cars and 20 motorbikes in the Appio Latino district.

After burning 'only' eight cars and two mopeds the night of July 4-5, the arsonists returned the night of July 11-12 and destroyed over 20 cars and bikes in various parts of the city. After a pause of some three weeks, with only some minor incidents July 16, the arsonists were back in action the night of August 2-3 when they set fire to a record 43 cars and 23 mopeds.

Evidence gathered after this attack allowed police to discover that the arsonists did not bring with them large tanks of inflammable liquid but smaller containers which were easier to transport, perhaps on mopeds or scooters. Police have decided to employ helicopters to try and catch the arsonists.
