The 14th edition of the Biennale of Architecture is now open in Venice.
Titled “Fundamentals”, it aims to explore the history of architecture, study its current state and imagine its possible future. It is directed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and chaired by Paolo Baratta.
65 countries are participating in the exhibit, which takes place in the Giardini and the Arsenale venues and in palazzos in the historic center of Venice.
Baratta presented this year’s edition as “a choral research on architecture.”
“With Rem Koolhaas, we have created an exceptional, research-centered Biennale of Architecture. Rem has planned an event that involves all of Biennale’s sectors [dance, music, theater and film, ed.] along with a bevy of researchers,” he added.
“Fundamentals consists of three interlocking exhibitions - Absorbing Modernity 1924-2014 (National Pavilions), Elements (Central Pavilion), and Monditalia (Arsenale) - that together illuminate the past, present and future of our discipline. After several architecture Biennales dedicated to the celebration of the contemporary, Fundamentals will look at histories, attempt to reconstruct how architecture finds itself in its current situation, and speculate on its future,” the Biennale website explains.
"Fundamentals" runs through November 23, 2014.
