Ed.: The Inspired Stays series highlights hotels we love around Italy. Each property is independently reviewed by an Italy Magazine writer, who is generally hosted on a complimentary basis. Our contributors do not accept compensation or gifts in exchange for specific types of coverage. We only showcase properties we would genuinely recommend overall.
Why we love it
With its beachfront location and pool, multiple restaurants, and full-service spa, Canne Bianche makes for a relaxing refuge during a Puglia road trip.
What to expect
Lounge in a hammock with a book and view of the waves, or settle into your private patio for an aperitivo. The Mangano family opened Canne Bianche to introduce guests to Puglia's natural wonders and rich flavors in one of the few waterfront luxury hotels in the region. Key amenities are a full-service spa, outdoor pool and hot tub, two restaurants, and a bar that often hosts live music and events for guests — such as wine tasting and afternoon tea.
Background
Canne Bianche — which translates to "White Reeds" — opened in 2010, but before then, the property was an empty lot where the namesake perennials blew in the wind. The hotel achieved five-star status in 2019, reflected in its attentive staff, well-maintained grounds and landscaping, and inviting common areas.
Location, location, location
The resort is set in a residential area in Torre Canne, about 30 minutes north of Brindisi/Salento Airport. Downtown Torre Canne is within walking distance — a pleasant walk along the beach, to boot.
Where you'll sleep
All six of Canne Bianche's room types are designed with an outdoor patio or terrace and a jacuzzi tub or walk-in shower. Rooms are bright with simple modern furnishings in muted colors with a few bold accents — much like the decor throughout the hotel. Locally crafted ceramics and framed black and white photography showcasing Pugliese life over the decades decorate some rooms, adding some region-specific flair. For a splurge that's splashy in more ways than one, reserve the master suite, which has a private pool.
Dining and drinks
Food and drinks emphasize authentic seasonal recipes and the two restaurants and a bar are named for herbs. Bar Cumino (cumin) serves wine and cocktails, house made focaccia, and local cheeses. Ristorante Timo's (thyme) locally-caught fish and made-in-house pastas are presented in a verdant atrium with vintage furnishings. Pizzeria Aneto (dill), which opened in 2021, has a summer patio; for a more private pizza party, the staff will even send a just-fired pie to your room.
Service notes
A bowl of walnuts and a nutcracker in the lobby, plus a nightly bed turndown service with cookies, make for a homey feeling at Canne Bianche. Classic rooms are a bit cramped; for more comfort, opt for a superior, which will have more space and partial sea views.
Spa time
The ground-floor spa, Aqua, is accessible for a fee. Although it's small, it has everything you need for prime relaxation. Make your way through the Finnish sauna, steam room, Swedish shower with cold water plunge, and hot tub, or select from an extensive treatment menu.
You should know
When traveling in Puglia, it's best to have a car to get around. Canne Bianche offers complimentary guest parking. Bikes are available, as is an electric car charging station.
Accessibility notes
The hotel has an elevator and ADA-friendly rooms and bathrooms.
