George Clooney and other members of the cast and crew of “The American” were back in the town of Sulmona in L’Aquila Province [Abruzzo] last week to reshoot several scenes from the film, reports ANSA.

After Sulmona the team were scheduled to move on to the towns of Castel del Monte and Castelvecchio Calvisio, also in the Province of L’Aquila. After last year’s massive earthquake, Clooney said that he had never before seen such devastation and later that filming in the area was a way of helping.

In the film, directed by Anton Corbijn, Clooney plays Jack, an assassin on what he has promised himself will be his last assignment. Hired by a mysterious woman, the job takes him to a beautiful Italian village where he breaks his own rule of not getting involved with people. He becomes friendly with the priest and has an affair with a local beauty played by Violante Placido, all the time fearing that his past will catch up with him.

The film builds up to a dramatic climax in the old, maze-like cobbled streets of the village.

The film is based on the book, “A Very Private Gentleman” by the British writer Martin Booth.

Elisabetta Canalis was not with Clooney but was visiting family in Sardinia.
