On April 1, 2021, the Italian government issued an ‘urgent’ decree aimed at regulating large cruise ship and container ship traffic inside Venice’s lagoon. 

The decree instructs the Port Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea to issue a ‘call for ideas’ (a public consultation) with the purpose to collect a number of proposals and projects that would be ‘technically and economically feasible’ for the construction of docking ports outside the ‘protected waters of Venic
