The successful ‘Sundays at the Museum’ initiative, which provided free admission to state museums on the first Sunday of the month, has been replaced by ‘Museum Week’: for six consecutive days, from Tuesday to Sunday, state museums including archeological sites, parks and monumental gardens will be free to enter. Advertised quite late, this year’s Museum Week takes place March 5-10.
Free Sundays at the Museum will only be implemented from October to March.
In addition, state museums will be free to enter an additional eight days throughout the year, which will be decided autonomously by each institution.
Therefore there will be a total of 20 free access days a year, an increase from the previous 12 days a year.
As part of the new initiative, young people aged between 18 and 25 years old will pay only €2 entry fee.
Below are some of the sites you can visit for free this week, until Sunday, March 10.
- In Rome: the Imperial Forums and the Roman Forum can be accessed for free from 8.30am to 5pm (last admission at 4pm), entering through the Colonna di Traiano, passing through the Foro di Nerva to reach the Roman Forum. Galleria Spada, the Vittoriano, Galleria Borghese, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, the National Roman Museum and many others will also be free to enter.
- In Turin you can visit the Royal Armory, the Sabauda Gallery, the Museum of Antiquities, Palazzo Carignano, Villa della Regina, the Royal Museums with the chance to see the Chapel of the Holy Shroud and the Royal Palace.
- In Florence you can visit the Uffizi, the Accademia Gallery, Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens for free.
- In Venice: Gallerie dell'Accademia, Palazzo Grimani, Galleria Giorgio Franchetti at Ca' D'Oro, National Archeological Museum of Venice.
- In Milan, you have free access to the Pinacoteca di Brera and Cenacolo Vinciano with The Last Supper, among others.
- In Naples, you can visit for free Sant'Elmo Castle-Museum of the 20th Century, Certosa and Museum of San Martino, Complesso dei Girolamini, the National Archaeological Museum, Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte, among others.
