A bid to have the Dolomites added to UNESCO's World Heritage List had been put on ice until further information is provided to the United Nations cultural organization, the German-langue Dolomiten newspaper reported on Thursday.

According to the daily, UNESCO wants more details on the effect being placed on the list would have on tourism in the Alpine region.

However, ANSA has been told by the head of the Alto Adige region natural parks authority, Renato Sascor, that UNESCO is also not satisfied by the level of coordination among the provinces which presented the requests: Bolzano, Trento, Udine and Pordenone.

The Dolomites are located in northern Italy and their name derives from the dolomite rock, which gives the mountains in the area their particular color and shape.

The Adige river defines the Dolomite's western border and the Pieve valley one to the east. To the north is the Puster Valley, while the Sugana Valley lies to the south.
