Under a new scheme to be introduced by AIDAA [Italian Association for the Protection of Animals and the Environment] Italian couples planning to marry or live together will, from Monday, be able to sign a prenuptial agreement regarding who will keep the pets if they separate, reports La Zampa [La Stampa’s animal section].
Couples who contact sportelloanimali@libero.it will be helped by a lawyer to draw up a legally binding contract which will stipulate how the pets are to be cared for and what will happen to them in the event of a separation.
Since the beginning of this year 2,300 couples have contacted AIDAA for advice about which partner should keep the pet when they part.
In 1,342 of the cases, the animal in question has been a dog. In some cases the pet has been “stolen” by the unlucky partner who has had to leave the marital home and some pets have found themselves in the middle of acrimonious custody battles.
