Haven’t got a thing to wear? How about an evening dress made of red paper napkins, a shirtwaister made of wrapping paper or a tunic made of teabags? Or perhaps a kimono made of used stamps is more your style? Or a Charleston dress made from price tags? Accessorise with a stole made of shredded magazines and a bag made of price tags and you’re ready to go.
At Fashion Paper, a travelling fashion show which opened in Milan yesterday, you can see clothes and accessories made exclusively of paper and cardboard and designed by students from some of the most prestigious of Italy’s art academies: AFOLModa di AFOL Milano, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera di Milano and theAccademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino.
The show is sponsored by Comieco, the National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging and its aim is to bring together the concepts of eco-sustainability and fashion whilst encouraging young designers to be both creative and environmentally aware.
Like every fashion show, this one has a wedding dress and it is made of tissues which have been formed into . However, the bride will have to be careful if the weather is inclement as the dress is “perishable” in the rain.
“Fashion Paper” is at the Palazzo Isimbardi, Milan, until 12th May. It then moves to the Galleria via Larga, Florence from 21st May – 12th June and to the Spazio Espositivo Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti, Turin, from 15th – 30th June.
