Gambero Rosso, Italy's most popular food guide, is marking the 20th anniversary of its Milan restaurant guide with the inclusion of three new categories of eateries—pubs, pizzerias and ethnic restaurants—and more than 150 new listings.
Though the printed guide won't come out until next month, Gambero Rosso has released its top rankings for 2013. Each restaurant is scored out of 100 points, with 60 points for cooking, 20 for the wine selection, 10 for service, and a final 10 for overall ambiance.
Only three restaurants received the coveted three fork rating for restaurants with more than 90 points: top-ranked Villa Crespi di Orta San Giulio in Novara, Dal Pescatore di Canneto sull'Oglio in Mantova and Da Vittorio di Brusaporto in Bergamo, which received three forks for the first time this year.
Top-ranked ethnic restaurant Iyo, an elegant Michelin-rated Japanese sushi and sashimi restaurant in Milan, nabbed three globes, while four restaurants—La Madia a Brione and Osteria della Villetta a Palazzolo sull'Oglio in Brescia, Osteria del Treno in Milan, and La Crepa a Isola Dovarese—received the top rank for trattorias, three gamberì.
Milan's Trussardi alla Scala lost its ranking after head chef Andrea Berton left the restaurant earlier this year.
The 2013 Gambero Rosso Milan Restaurant Guide will hit stores and news stands in mid-October.
