Falcade, a small village in the Dolomites of Belluno, is hosting an original competition this weekend: the “Giant Polenta Challenge”.
A group of mastri polentai (expert polenta chefs) from the area will try to set a new record for the world’s biggest polenta: they will in fact try to prepare 4,000 kg of polenta, using 800 kg of flour, cooked in 3,500 liters of water, inside a pot measuring 2 ½ meters of diameter.
The idea came from a local entrepreneur, Fabrizio Vigilante, who thought the event would be a great occasion to promote this beautiful mountain area and, at the same time, show the cooking skills of the local mastri polentai, who carry on an ancient tradition.
The goal is to exceed the record set by the village of Pianello di Cagli, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, which created a 3,560-kg polenta in 2012.
The “Giant Polenta Challenge” takes place Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, and will include music, food stands, an exposition of ancient crafts, horse-riding, and talent shows.
