The world of fashion has always been competitive and dramatic, but designer Giorgio Armani has taken things to new heights by denouncing his rivals for their “ugly” creations.
His rant came at the close of Milan’s Fashion Week, where he claimed that Miuccia Prada’s designs captured "irony...and bad taste that becomes chic".
Armani was specifically criticizing Prada’s decision to raise money via a public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange. The experienced designer argued that, by contrast, his fashion house has remained independent.
“Fashion is in the hands of the banks and the stock market,” said Armani. “It no longer belongs to the owners, but to those above them”.
His tongue-lashing was not reserved for Prada alone. Armani also had some choice words for Vogue director Anna Wintour, saying: "When I see how she is dressed, I don't believe in her tastes one second. Anyway, who will remember Anna Wintour in the history of fashion? No one.”
Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfeld was not spared. "I don't like his fashion, his spirit, his attitude. It's too much caricature", Giorgio concluded.
The claws have certainly come out on the catwalk.
