The winners of the 2013 David di Donatello film awards – Italy’s equivalent to the Oscars – were announced during a gala ceremony on 14 June. The standout winner of the night was Giuseppe Tornatore with his film ‘La Migliore Offerta’ (The Best Offer). A tale of an obsessive art auctioneer, ‘La Migliore Offerta’ won Best Film. Other nominees were a drama about the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa ‘Diaz’, the coming-of-age memoir ‘Educazione Siberiana’ (Siberian Education), a drama about an introverted teenager ‘Io E Te’ (Me And You) and political drama ‘Viva La Libertà’ (Long Live Liberty). Tornatore scooped up the Best Director award winner for ‘La Migliore Offerta’ as well as the David Giovani (Young David) award voted for by schools. Other candidates in the Best Director category were Matteo Garrone for ‘Reality’, Bernardo Bertolucci for ‘Io E Te’, Gabriele Salvatores for ‘Educazione Siberiana’ and Daniele Vicari for ‘Diaz’. Valerio Mastandrea won Best Actor for ‘Gli Equilibristi’ (The Acrobats). He beat Aniello Arena for ‘Reality’, Sergio Castellito for ‘Una Famiglia Perfetta’ (A Perfect Family), Roberto Herlitzka for ‘Il Rosso E Il Blu’ (The Red And The Blue), Luca Marinelli for ‘Tutti I Santi Giorni’ (Every Holy Day) and Toni Servillo for ‘Viva La Libertà’. Margherita Buy won Best Actress for ‘Viaggio Sola’ (I Travel Alone). She beat Valeria Bruni Tedeschi for ‘Viva La Libertà’, Federica Victoria Caiozzo for ‘Tutti I Santi Giorni’, Tea Falco for ‘Io E Te', and Jasmine Trinca for ‘Un Giorno Devi Andare’ (One Day You Should Go). The Best Supporting Actor award went to Valerio Mastandrea for ‘Viva La Libertà’ and the Best Supporting Actress award to Maya Sansa for ‘Bella Addormentata’ (Dormant Beauty). A Career award was given to screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami. Michael Haneke’s ‘Amour’ won Best European Film. Other films in the running were Dustin Hoffman’s movie inspired by the works of Romantic composer Guiseppe Verdi, ‘Quartet’, Sam Mendes’ ‘Skyfall’, Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina’, and Jacques Audiard’s ‘Rust and Bone’. Quentin Tarantino’s homage to spaghetti westerns, ‘Django Unchained’ won Best Foreign Film. Other films nominated were Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo’, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’, Ang Lee’s ‘Life Of Pi’ and David O. Russell’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook’.
