“Thank you to Italy that’s a crazy country but beautiful”: those were the words Italian director Paolo Sorrentino said at the end of his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe ceremony Sunday night, upon collecting the best foreign film award for "The Great Beauty."
The other nominees were France's "Blue Is the Warmest Color," Denmark's "The Hunt," Iran's "The Past," and Japan's "The Wind Rises."
The last time Italy won a Golden Globe was in 1989 for Cinema Paradiso.
The Great Beauty has also made the Oscars shortlist of the nine foreign-language films from which the final five nominees will be picked. The announcement will be made on January 16.
