A school in Naples has become the third in Italy to be shut down as a precautionary measure to avoid the spread of the new H1N1 flu.
The Belforte school was ordered to close until June 3 after an 18-year-old female student came down with the new flu on her return from New York.
The girl was part of a group of 400 Italians who took part in an international initiative at the United Nations involving 10,000 students.
Eight students from Rome who were part of the group were diagnosed with the flu and the two schools they attended in the capital were shut down on Friday.
The school closings in the Italian capital were the first since health officials adopted precautionary measures following the outbreak of the flu in Mexico this spring.
Aside from the student, who is under quarantine at her home, an American tourist was hospitalised at the weekend in Naples with the flu.
Her condition is said to be improving after she suffered a high temperature on Sunday.
At present there have been 19 confirmed cases of the new flu in Italy.
The latest report from the World Health Organization said that there are now 12,515 confirmed cases of the new flu in 46 countries and that the death toll had risen to 91.
All the fatalities have been in North and Central America with 80 in Mexico, nine in the United States and one each in Canada and Costa Rica.
The US has the highest number of confirmed cases, 6,552, followed by Mexico with 4,174 and Canada with 805.
In Europe there are 133 cases in Spain, 122 in Britain, 17 in Germany and 16 in France.
