American chocolate maker Hershey has launched a new line of spreadable chocolates, including a hazelnut flavor which looks a lot like Nutella – even in the packaging.
The move is intended to get a slice of the big Nutella market, which continues to grow: according to market researcher Euromonitor International, the sale of Nutella in the U.S. has more than tripled in the last five years, with a turnover of approximately 240 million dollars.
Besides the hazelnut flavor, the Hershey line includes a plain chocolate flavor and an almond and chocolate spread.
Hershey suggests people try putting the chocolate spread on a variety of foods, saying it's a "snack enhancer" for items such as graham crackers, strawberries, pineapples and even pickles (the pickles suggestion would horrify most Italians).
The problem is, as all Nutella lovers know, Nutella really can’t be imitated. And hardcore fans will probably stick to the real thing, made by Italian company Ferrero, which invented it in 1964.
