The historic building that housed the Italian Embassy in Washington will be turned into a luxury condominium.
The Neo-Renaissance building dates back to 1925 and is located in the neighborhood of Adams Morgan, on 16th Street.
Abandoned in the early '80s, it had become a refuge for vandals and the homeless, until it was acquired by the Potomac Construction Group, which obtained permission to turn it into a luxury condominium with 110 apartments - it will be called Il Palazzo.
The design firm collaborating on the project is working with the developer to preserve the exterior of the building, as well as some of the more magnificent spaces inside, like the grand foyer, the monumental staircase, the ballroom, and the library.
The project includes conversion of the mansion to apartments, construction of a three-story addition in the north side yard, and construction of an eight-story apartment building at the rear of the site.
The former Embassy of Italy is part of the historic “Embassy Row” in Washington, located 20 blocks north of the White House.
The Italian Embassy in Washington is now located at 3000 Whitehaven Street.
