Ed.: The Inspired Stays series highlights hotels we love around Italy. Each property is independently reviewed by an Italy Magazine writer, who is generally hosted on a complimentary basis. Our contributors do not accept compensation or gifts in exchange for specific types of coverage. We only showcase properties we would genuinely recommend overall.
Why we love it
With its vintage vibe, sleek rooms, stunning views from the rooftop terrace and a location within easy reach of Rome's top attractions, Hotel L'Orologio Roma is tough to top for visitors to the Eternal City.
What to expect
Travelers looking for a centrally located Rome hotel that offers an elevated stay — literally and figuratively — will do well to check into Hotel L'Orologio. The sleek 4-star hotel occupies a historic palazzo just steps from Largo di Torre Argentina. Modern, understated rooms and a mid-century modern lobby tick the comfort boxes, but it's the top-floor terrace that really dazzles, with views of the Pantheon, a distant St. Peter's, and the rooftops of Rome.
Background
Opened in summer 2022 in a neo-Renaissance building, Hotel L'Orologio is one of three clock-themed hotels (orologio is clock or watch in Italian) from Wtb Hotels group — the others are in Florence and Venice. Vintage timepieces, artwork and clock-motif decor are central to all three hotels.
Location, location, location
L’Orologio’s location is an absolute strong suit. It's steps from Largo Argentina, which is both a transport hub and an archaeological site, and just a few minutes from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Vatican City, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum can easily be reached on foot or via bus or tram.
Where you’ll sleep
We visited in August, when a cool, comfortable hotel room with a good bed is a top priority. Our 258 sq. ft deluxe room was done up in a minimalist modern style, with dark wood decor and pops of color. The marble bathroom features a strong shower, and amenities include a minibar and free bottled water, coffee and tea. Our room sat over a busy thoroughfare, but soundproofed windows made for a quiet sleep. Upgraded rooms have more square footage, and rooms can be connected to form family suites.
Dining and drinks
Breakfast and evening aperitivo are the only food and drink offerings. Both take place on the rooftop, which has an indoor seating area and that simply spectacular outdoor terrace we mentioned earlier. Outfitted with comfy couches and big sun umbrellas, it’s such a lovely setting morning and night. Breakfast, which is included with most rates, is a well-stocked buffet of healthy and more decadent items. In the evenings, there’s a nice menu of cocktails, beer and wine and light bites.
Service notes
Hotel L'Orologio is a 4-star hotel, with service and amenities in line with that ranking. Friendly front desk staff are standing by to call a taxi and offer directions or sightseeing advice. Housekeeping and food and beverage staff were cordial and efficient.
Accessibility notes
The hotel has two elevators: one for guests and one for visitors to the rooftop bar.
Family perks
While there are no particular family amenities, children are welcomed at the hotel and rooms can be combined to form family suites. For families visiting Rome, the location, within walking distance of plenty of kid-friendly sites and car-free areas, is a big plus.
