A hotel made entirely of rubbish has opened in the centre of Rome. The Save the Beach Hotel is an environmental project sponsored by the beer brand Corona Extra and the hotel has been designed by the German action artist H A Schult.
12,000 kilos of rubbish collected from the beaches of Europe have been used to build the hotel and the walls are made of cans, toys and other debris. There is no running water, electricity or room service but there are clean sheets on the beds. Five people stayed in the hotel last night and the Danish model Helena Christensen is to spend a night there.
The hotel has been built to raise awareness of the state of some of Europe’s beaches and to raise funds to clean them up. “We live in the garbage era”, says H A Schult.
Would you like to stay in the hotel? You can enter a competition to spend a night there for free on the Corona Save the Beach website but the last time we looked, the hotel was full. Romans, reports the website, love their new hotel.
