We are looking at prepositions again this week and we are going to learn how to say “in the” or “to the”.
As we have seen, you have to know the definite article rules to be able to use the right preposition. If you want to say “in” , you combine the preposition in with the definite article as follows:
Il – nel
Lo – nello
L’ [masculine] nell’
La – nella
L’ [feminine] – nell’
I – nei
Gli - negli
Le – nelle
So we say:
nel giardino – in the garden
nei giardini – in the gardens
nella stanza – in the room
nell’aula – in the classroom
But the good news is that you can use “in” by itself with words such as:
Città, campagna, macchina and names of rooms.
Dove sei, Matia? Sono in cucina!
Vado in città.
Abito in campagna.
Sono arrivato in macchina.
You also use “in” alone with feminine names of countries:
Abito in Italia.
Vado in Francia.
With masculine singular names of countries, you must use nel:
nel Brasile
With masculine plural names of countries, you must use nei or negli, according to the correct definite article:
negli Stati Uniti
You use “in” alone with feminine names of Italian regions:
In Sicilia
But you use nel with masculine names of regions:
Nel Lazio
