Paolo Virzì’s “The Human Capital” and Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” were the big winners at the David di Donatello Awards last night in Rome.
“The Human Capital” won for best film, while Sorrentino won the award for best director. The two films received a total of seven and nine awards respectively.
Toni Servillo, who portrays ageing writer Jep Gambardella in foreign-Oscar winner “The Great Beauty,” was awarded best actor, while the three other acting categories all went to actors starring in “The Human Capital”: Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (best actress), Fabrizio Gifuni (best supporting actor) and Valeria Golino (best supporting actress).
Pierfrancesco Diliberto won the award for best emerging director for “The Mafia Only Kills in Summer” (read ITALY Magazine’s interview with him here).
Sophia Loren received a special award for her work in “The Human Voice”, a short film directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti. Walking on stage, looking great in a long black dress, she received the most enthusiastic round of applause of the night from the audience.
The David di Donatello Award, named after Donatello's David, is a film award presented each year for cinematic performances and production by L'accademia del Cinema Italiano (The Academy of Italian Cinema). It has been described as Italy's version of the Oscars.
