Italy's year-on-year inflation rate fell to 0.9% this month, its lowest since November 1968, when it was 0.7%, national statistics bureau Istat reported on Friday.
Compared to April, when the inflation rate stood at 1.2%, the consumer price index rose 0.2%, Istat added.
Fuel prices were back on the rise this month with gasoline climbing 1.8% and diesel 1.7% over April.
Nevertheless, prices were still significantly lower than in May of last year, 15.8% less for gasoline and 255 for diesel.
Inflation in the euro zone in May fell to an historic low of 0%, down from 0.6% in April.
