Posters of photographs by contemporary Italian photographers and poems by Italian poets are on display on Washington D.C. buses.
The project features posters on District of Columbia buses of images shot by Italian photographers alongside verses of poetry from Italian poets, including winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975 Eugenio Montale, Cesare Pavese and Giuseppe Ungaretti.
Called ‘The Journey, The Motion, The Image’, the travelling collection of photographs and poetry ends its time on the road in March. But the prestigious Phillips Collection will then hold an exhibition ‘Next Stop Italy: A Journey into Italian Contemporary Photography’, which features 12 works by established and emerging Italian photographers, including Andrea Galvani, Franco Vaccari and Paolo Ventura.
The show includes works depicting a range of subjects, from landscapes to surrealist figures. The exhibit aims to take travellers on a journey through various stages in Italian photography that carries Italian creativity and culture to the New World. It runs from 9 March to 28 April. Admission to the Phillips Collection costs $12 at the weekends and is by donation on weekdays.
The poster campaign and photography show are part of the Year of Italian Culture in the United States initiative that began in January of this year. It is running throughout 2013 across the United States, and involves more than 180 events focused on Italian culture in 40 American cities aimed at promoting and revitalising Italian culture in the United States.
