(ANSA) - The Italian Parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee on Tuesday have the definitive green light to a new law creating Grandparents' Day.
The date chose to celebrate grandparents was October 2, the same day the church dedicates to guardian angels.
The bill has cleared the Senate by unanimous vote, while in the House the Democratic Left and Communist Re-foundation parties voted against and members of the centrist opposition Margherita party abstained. The law invites regional, provincial and municipal governments to sponsor initiatives which highlight the role of grandparents in society. There will also be annual Grandfather and Grandmother of the year awards to be given out by the head of state.
