When we were at the Dolce Vita exhibition in London last April a number of readers who visited the stand asked if we could do more on Italy’s islands, particularly Sardinia and Sicily. As you know, we like to oblige wherever possible and have given island-lovers a double helping in this issue. Fiona Cameron’s article on Northern Sardinia looks at the island’s wonderful historic sights and amazing coastal resorts including the famous Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo – glamorous international haunt of movie stars and supermodels.

Meanwhile, on quite a different note, award-winning Italian photographer Fabrizio Fiorenzano reports on a Sicilian festival in Militello where thousands of fireworks illuminate the September sky as the inhabitants celebrate the feast of the Madonna delle Stelle. I think this mix of sacred and profane sums up what so many of us find irresistible about Italy.'(...)"
