Last week Italy went through the biggest winter storm in more than 20 years which caused disruptions across the country.
The unusual sight of Rome covered in 70 centimeters of snow or a frosted Venetian Lagoon offered the chance for great pictures that spread around the web, but the harsh weather conditions had extremely serious consequences. At least 17 people died because of the storms, thousands remained without electricity, some drivers were stuck on unplowed and unsalted roads for hours, schools, public offices and many private establishments were closed and many workers had to return home from work on foot, as taxis and buses were hard to find.
Today, in Rome and other cities in central Italy, transportation is slowly getting back to normal and people are returning to their business. So far, harsh weather has spared the Sicily where temperatures were recorded at 18 degrees celsius last Friday and people continued to enjoy restaurants' outdoor service.
