Sometimes truth is indeed stranger than fiction – although this episode can claim an illustrious literary reference.
In the cemetery of Cimitile, near Naples, a man and a woman were caught having sex in the chapel located right next to the grave of the woman’s husband, a local news site, Retenews24.it, reported.
The clandestine love encounters had been going on for a while before the two were discovered by the cemetery’s custodian on his tour of inspection before closing for the day. It seems the two chose this location because they did not want to be discovered by their respective families.
As the guardian pointed his torch on the naked couple, they quickly put their clothes back on and ran away.
At least the lovers can boast a prestigious literary antecedent: a similar story was told by Latin author Petronius in his Satyricon, published in the late first century AD. The main character was the seemingly inconsolable Widow of Ephesus, who ended up being consoled by a generous, and quite handsome, soldier - next to her husband's grave.
