Summer ExodusNo less than 20 million Italians are expected to be on the road this weekend making use of at least 10 million cars. This will be the most traffic-heavy weekend recorded.

Traffic police is already warning people to prepare themselves for long queues in very high temperatures. Travellers are advised to take plenty of water with them and make sure their cars are in goof conditions as the high temperatures and long waits with air conditioning can lead to failures.

Several roadworks have been suspended to ensure a more smooth flow of traffic. In the North, traffic is expected on the A1 from Milano to Napoli, the A4 Milano-Brescia towards the east; the A8 Milano-Varese towares the lakes; the A12 Genove-Roma and the A10 Genova-Savona towards France; on the A14 Bologna-Taranto up to Ancona.

In the Center and South traffic is anticipated from Rome to Orte in both directions (also due to the roadworks on the Galleria di Nazzano); the A11 Firenza-Pisa; the A12 Roma-Civitavecchia;A30 Caserta-Salerno.

Such exoduses are a yearly feature as Italians are particularly attached to having their holidays in the first two months of August each year, with the majority of business in cities closing and all holiday destinations overflowing with visitors and relatives returning back to their birthplaces.
