A memorial park commemorating the influential and revolutionary Baroque artist Caravaggio is scheduled to be inaugurated in July in the Monte Argentario area of Tuscany.
The park will be located in the former San Sebastiano cemetery and its location was chosen because Caravaggio is believed to have died in nearby Porto Ercole.
The painter’s remains, found at a local church in 2010, will be moved to the park, which will feature colors, in flowers and pillars, Caravaggio used in his paintings.
"All Caravaggio's fans will be able to pay homage to his remains and show their affection and admiration for his genius," said Silvano Vinceti, head of the Caravaggio Foundation.
Caravaggio was born around 1571 in Milan and was active in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily until he died in 1610, likely of a fever, although some scholars argue that he was murdered. He led a tumultuous life, and was notorious for brawling. He spent the last years of his life in exile.
Officials said visitors will be able to see his works in HD and relive the last few days of his life, making the park not just an homage to a great artist, but also a tourist attraction.
