Milan, Italy’s second city and its undisputed fashion capital, may be facing humiliation by the end of July because it is in danger of being left off the board in a
new version of Monopoly.
The new board, which is being prepared to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the launch of Monopoly in Italy, will replace street names by the names of cities
and on the website monopolyitalia Italians can vote for the twenty-two cities which will appear. A glance at the state of play last night revealed that the top five places which people have voted for so far are Chieti, Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, Barletta and the Island of Elba, with Milan showing nowhere in the first twenty-two.
This is a state of affairs which cannot be allowed to continue, according to Pdl [People of Freedom] city Councillor Alessandro Fede Pellone, who has called upon
Milan’s Mayor, Letizia Moratti, to “urgently support and promote the inclusion of our city on the new Monopoly board and to urge our citizens to vote”. The omission
of Milan on the board, he says, is a major blow to a city wishing to take on an international profile for Expo 2015.
The Mayor complied, telling reporters on Thursday that for two days she had “dealt with nothing but Monopoly”.
However, Councillor Pierfrancesco Majorino, who leads the Democratic Party group on the city’s Council, thinks the whole situation is a farce and has said that even a
primary school child knows that the Mayor has more important matters to attend to. Citizens have until 28th July to vote for the cities on the new Monopoly board.
