Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be in Rome on Tuesday where he will meet with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, a spokesman for the Israeli leader told ANSA on Monday.

Mark Regev said that Netanyahu had chosen Rome to be the first stop on his first tour of Europe since taking office this spring.

Netanyahu, he added, ''is eager to engage in good discussions and dialogue which is intimate, constructive and positive with European leaders''.

After Rome, where he will spend the night, the Israeli leader will go to Paris for talks with President Nicolas Sarkozy there before heading back to Israel on Thursday.

While in Paris, Netanyahu is expected to also meet with George Mitchell, US President Barack Obama's special envoy to the Middle East.

Netanyahu's visit to Europe is also his first trip abroad since he gave a conditional green light to the existence of a 'demilitarised' Palestinian state.
