According to a survey conducted by the Italian Hoteliers’ Federation, Federalberghi, 46.3% of Italians will not go on holiday this year, mainly for economic reasons. This compares to 43.8% who stayed at home last year.

The figures may be deceptive, however, as many Italians go to stay with relatives at the sea or in their own second homes in the country or at the sea and do not count this as “going on holiday”.

Last year, 18.3 million Italians stayed in Italy for their holidays, the most popular destination having been Sicily, followed by Puglia and Emilia-Romagna. Only 7.7 million went abroad where the most popular destinations were Spain, France and Greece.

In a Harris poll published this week, Italy was the most popular foreign destination for Americans holidaying abroad. Of the 2,227 adults interviewed, the majority of men said that would prefer to go to Australia whilst the majority of women said that they would prefer to go to Italy.

If you lived in Italy, would you go abroad for your holiday?
