(ANSA) - One person was killed and five people injured, one critically, in a motorway accident caused by a prank, placing an engine block in the middle of the highway.
The incident took place just before 2am Saturday between the Cassino and Pontecorvo exists on the A1 motorway linking Naples and Milan.
The victim was 46-year-old Natale Gioffre', a Messina native who lives in Turin, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf which hit the engine block which was sitting in the middle of the lane.
The impact made him lose control of the car which flipped over and hit a Renault Clio. Gioffre' was fatally injured in the crash and died on the way to hospital.
Also inside the Golf were Gioffre's 15-year-old son Francesco, who remains in critical condition at Cassino hospital, and two friends of the victim, brothers Claudio and Celmente Schinco, respectively 49 and 45, who are from Foggia but also live in Turin. The two brothers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for observation.
Inside the Renault Clio were Rodiano D'Abruzzo, 23, and Giuseppe Martone, 22, from Rignano Flaminio, a suburb north of Rome. They sustained minor injuries. Traffic on the A1 motorway was interrupted for several hours.
