Fresh from victory at the Oscars 2014 for “The Great Beauty,” Italian director Paolo Sorrentino is already back at work. Last month, he began shooting “Youth,” (La Giovinezza), a film he described as “small” and “intimate.”
Written by Sorrentino himself, the film tells the story of two old friends in their eighties who vacation together in an elegant hotel in the Alps. One is a retired composer who gave up his career a long time ago, the other a filmmaker working on what he believes will be his last film. The two friends reflect on their lives and the time they have left, while they’re shown interacting with fellow hotel guests and their children.
The movie features such prominent actors as British actor Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, Rachel Weisz, Harvey Keitel and Paul Dano.
This is not the first time Sorrentino has scored A-list English-language actors: in 2011, he worked with Sean Penn and Frances McDormand on “This Must Be the Place.”
“Youth” is set to be released in the spring of 2015.
