Turkish Nobel-prize winning writer Orhan Pamuk will get an honorary degree from the University of Florence next Wednesday.

Pamuk will attend the ceremony on May 13, the university said Wednesday.

Pamuk, whose work has sold over seven million copies in 50 languages, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006. It was Turkey's first Nobel.

Among his best-known novels are The White Castle, The Black Book, My Name Is Red and Snow.

Pamuk is also known for his commitment to free speech and was briefly charged in 2005 for talking about the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in 1915-16, an episode which Turkey insists was not genocide.
