Dozens of shoe models, from those worn by ancient Romans to those designed for Hollywood stars, are currently on display at the Museum of Fashion and Costume in Palazzo Pitti in Florence for an exhibition titled “Ai piedi degli dei,” At God’s Feet.
The exhibition aims to explore the roles that footwear has played in the West from ancient times to the present day. There are about 80 works of art and shoe models on display, some on loan from important museums such as the Louvre.
A highlight of the exhibition is a collection of the main types of shoes used in the period between the 5th century B.C. and the 4th century A.D., either as depicted on precious works of art, including reliefs and painted vases, or as the original, such as the exceptional finds from the Roman fort of Vindolanda in northern England.
The display includes the 'caligae' worn by Roman soldiers, the seductive sandals worn by Greek mistresses, and the refined shoes worn by the Roman aristocracy.
On display are also some of the most popular creations designed for Hollywood stars including those worn by Liz Taylor in Cleopatra, by Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur, by Russell Crowe in the Gladiator and by Colin Farrell in Alexander.
Also on display are contemporary shoes designed by top brands including Genny, Céline, Richard Tyler, Renè Caovilla and Donna Karan.
